All you Need to Know When you Travel Australia's Outback --part One

Australia’s Outback isn't called the last frontier in the planet for nothing. For that matter, it isn't called Amazing for nothing either. The Outback is known as the “Back of Beyond”, which just means it could be anywhere in the map. Or rather, it refuses to be mapped. It's one of the most magical, breathtaking, and simply glorious place you can ever visit. It's a feast to the senses as much as it is a challenge to the spirit. The lush landscape, blushing mountains, crazy rock formations, the solemn deserts, the vast skies, and bustling wildlife are only some of the wonderful and bizarre gems to unearth in your travel to Australia's Outback.

As much as the Australian Outback is beautiful, it can also be dangerous. And this is no exaggeration. Which is why the list of advices below should help you travel the Outback the safest and most enjoyable way of all.

Things to Bring

binoculars

camera (with extra batteries)

wide-brimmed hat

sunglasses

sunscreen of at least SPF30

driza-bone (dry as a bone) waterproof raincoat

good boots

insect-repellant lotion

first-aid kit

swiss knife

flashlight

mobile phone ( with charger and extra batteries)

CB radio

hand-held GPS unit

compass

water (at least three litres per day per person)

non-perishable food

water-proof matches or lighter

camping tent

bedding

and finally, lots of will power

For your 4WD

(and it must be only a 4WD if you really want to get anywhere in the Outback)

petrol

engine oil

spare tyres

extra water (in case your engine boils)

maps

Group adventures

Nowadays, travel packages in the Australian Outback are usually offered in organised small group adventures. It might not be as romantic as when it's just the two of you, but at least a group tour is safer. And there's less chance of getting lost. Experienced tour guides will lead your pack while dishing out tidbits of information and trivia about the signts along the way.

Rule of thumb: Stick to the group and stick to marked paths so you don't get lost.

Wear it Wise

Australia’s Outback gets extremely hot throughout the day, and then plunges into a deep cold overnight. Because of this, pack a selection of clothes that's lightweight and cotton (for the day), long, when hiking in the bush or trekking through unknown grassland. Of course, if you intend to cap your day at a campfire in the open air of the night, get into some warm fleece trousers and woollen pullovers.

Swap your sandals for more hardy and protective boots. Also a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses will protect you from severe Aussie sun. Needless, lavish yourself with a sunscreen of at least SPF30.

Rule of thumb: Slip, slop, slap. Slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen and slap on a hat!

You haven't even begun yet.

The Accessories You Need In Travelling

So you decided that you deserve a vacation. After searching and finding the best place for you there is still one problem left. What to pack for your trip? What if you forget something that you really need?

The best way to pack your luggage is to make a list of what you need. It depends on where you are going to. If you go to the mountains you should get a backpack, a mini-flashlight, a rain coat just in case it rains, even a sleeping bag if you intend to stay for the night with your friends and enjoy a great barbecue.

If you plan to go to the seaside take your swimming suit, sunglasses, sandals, a beach towel and even a waterproof camera if you intend to take capture special moments underwater. Never forget your digital camera, binoculars, mp3 player, toiletries, some travel appliances like electric razor, hairdryer, and a first-aid kit, just in case you or somebody else gets hurt.

You should also take a nice neck pillow and a small blanket if your trip is longer. In order for you to take a nap don't forget to take eye masks so you will not be bothered by the sun light. They are ultra comfortable using natural cotton for sensitive facial skin. All noises can be completely reduced by the famous ear planes.

They are safe, soft and disposable and even tested by Navy Pilots so you should not be worried about them. If you have any electrical appliances with you always buy an electrical currency converter. Take with you all the important things that you use at home whether it's a coffee maker or a clothing steamer. A personal ID and Boarding Pass carrier which you can carry it around the neck should not miss too.

A travel security wallet or a clip security wallet it's necessary for your own safety. They can be worn around your neck or waist under your clothes. It is always a good idea to take a travel alarm clock because not all hotels provide one. If you travel in a country that has a different language than yours then take a language translator or a dictionary.

All travel accessories can be bought online or if you have time left you should go to a proper travel accessories store so you can try all the things you need. Now you are almost ready for your vacation, the only thing left is to have fun and enjoy your trip.

Roofing Maintenance Tips

The roof is a vitally important component in the structure of your house. It needs to be sound and waterproof for a long period of time. You can ensure this through proper roof maintenance. In the normal course, every homeowner should make a routine inspection of the roof every year and check for any signs of damage. But most people do not take this step being unaware about the need for roof maintenance. Normally, an asphalt roofing system should last for about 15 years and other systems like tile, clay, slate, metal etc lasting longer. But this is possible only if the roof is maintained properly.

Here are a few tips that can help you to maintain your roof satisfactorily.

First of all make sure that there are no trees growing in close proximity to the roof. There should not be any branches touching the roof. Promptly trim/cut off any branch leaning on the roof. These can gouge and scratch the roof material; the leaves can choke the gutter and cause water to flow into the attic. It can also run down behind the fascia or into living spaces. When you trim back trees the shade is reduced removing humidity that in turn leads to formation of mold, fungus and algae that can eat into the material of the roof. The air circulation also is appreciably improved.

Taking along a pair of binoculars, go to your backyard and find a spot, free from trees and other visual obstructions. That affords a clear view of the roof. Inspect the roof for broken, loose or missing tiles/shingles. Look carefully for missing nails that leave holes through which water seeps in. Protruding or exposed nails also lead to the same problem. If you observe an accumulation of large quantity of granules in the rain gutters, this could be an indication that granular coating of the roof is wearing away. Dark patches on asphalt shingles can mean existence of mold. Check whether the roof is sagging on the ridges or in the center. If the roof is flat, check for blistering in the coating. Check for accumulation of leaves and debris around plumbing vents, in the valleys or near the chimney. These are a source of problems and must be cleared promptly.

Make a list of all minor repairs that need to be done. You may need to add some repair compound around the chimney or any other opening(s). Repair blistering in the coating. It can be corrected by popping with a penknife and coat with roofing cement. Replace or repair old and damaged tiles, shingles etc. Clean the gutters and remove all signs of moss and mildew. Install zinc roof protector strips along the roof ridge to prevent formation of moss and fungus on the roof again. When water runs over these strips it forms harmless zinc oxide to form a protective coating that stems growth of algae, moss etc.

Inspect the attic minutely to check the roof's watertightness. It is the right place to look for any problem areas that allow water penetration through the roof. The signs of water damage can be located by the presence of dark stained areas on the wood. These are usually found around openings, nails or other roof components. These should be attended to immediately.

Finally give a coat of elastomeric coating to the roof.

Backpacking With Children

Although backpacking with children may seem like a lot of effort, the benefits gained from taking them along can far outweigh the hassles. The benefits include not competing with technology for your children’s attention, teaching them self-sufficiency skills, and watching them connect with the peacefulness of nature. Here are six tips that allow for a more positive experience when backpacking with children.

1. Involve Them In Packing

Make a list of the items to bring and have your children help collect them. If they are not old enough to read, you can read the items to them. This is important because the more the children are involved in preparations the more they will feel a part of the trip, and the less likely they are to be resistant to backpacking.

2. Get Their Help with Choosing the Trail

Choose a couple of trails and sites that are acceptable to you and then let the children choose from among them. This is another way of involving the children and letting them have a say in where you will be going.

3. Give Them Special Items For Backpacking

Give them something special that is to be used only for backpacking. Children enjoy binoculars, water bottles with fun designs on them, walking sticks, and small waterproof cameras. Another special item that is not only fun, but can be very useful, is their own flashlight.

4. Get Them Excited About Going

Getting children excited can be as simple as talking about backpacking in terms of how fun it is. Another method of eliciting excitement is to go to the library and get books on, and about, backpacking. These may be how-to books, especially illustrated ones, or fiction books with characters that have adventures in the woods.

5. Bring Along Games

While there is a lot to entertain children with while backpacking, it is always a good idea to bring along a game or two. These are useful when it rains, or at night when the children are in the tent, but too restless to sleep. Small, lightweight games specific to backpacking can be found in stores that specialize in outdoor activities. Other options consist of purchasing an extra small deck of playing cards (these are about 1/4 of the size of standard decks), using travel versions of traditional games, or repacking games, such as bring the dice from a Yahtzee game in a zip lock bag with a couple sheets of paper and small pencils or pens.

6. Praise Their Hard Work

It can work wonders when children feel that they are impressing their parents. One easy way to accomplish this is to comment on how hard they are working, both with the hike and with camp chores. First, encourage them to do a good job, and then praise the results.

While backpacking with children can be extra work, the end result is often more than worth it. There is something about nature than can calm even an otherwise hyper kid, and time alone with parents provides the perfect opportunity for long talks and quiet companionship, that may proof elusive when at home where computers, televisions, and phones all make distractions a common occurrence.

So, load up the kids next time, and build a special memory that only backpacking with children can create.

Your First Bird Watching Field Trip - What you Need

If you love birds and love bird watching but until now have confined your birdwatching activities to the back yard or local parks, it may be time to get your back pack and venture into your first bird watching field trip.

If this is your first time, the following tips will give you a good basic foundation of necessities you will need in order to best enjoy your time in the outdoors.

Often you will hear a bird before you see it. Learning to bird by ear is an important part of becoming a good bird watcher. The more time you spend in the field watching birds, the better you will become at learning to recognize the different mating calls and vocalizations made by your favorite birds. To hone up on your skills you can actually purchase CD recordings of the bird calls of literally thousands of birds. Use these to practice identifying different species by their songs and sounds.

Knowing the types of shelter and trees that your bird species prefer is the second key to finding their nests and setting up your stakeout. Some prefer to build their nests close to the ground, while others will find the topmost branches of a tree to build their home.

To have the best chance of spotting your bird species, it's important to know what times of the day it tends to feed. Most species prefer to start their foraging just before sunrise and will continue up to noon. Some, however, prefer later in the day and you'll find them just becoming active before sunset.

The most necessary piece of equipment you'll need is a spotting scope with a tripod. A regular telescope won't do. You need one with the proper level of magnification. As birding as become more and more popular, it's become easier to find many brands of birding binoculars made specifically for bird watchers.

Other Birding Necessities

To be prepared to spend the day outdoors with your bird friends, you'll need the following minimum supplies:

- A sunscreen of at least 15 SPF. This will provide moderate protection from the sun. For extended periods of time, go for an SPF of 30+.

- Water. You lose lots of water while hiking which can lead to dehydration. Take a canteen or bottled water. Drink lots of water before you start your hike and take periodic sips along the way.

- Insect repellant. For the best possible protection against mosquitoes and other insects, you should apply the insect repellant to both your skin and your clothing, according to the label instructions.

- Footwear. You'll be doing lots of walking and hiking and you'll want the most comfortable boots possible. In addition, if there's the possibility that you will be trekking through marsh or extremely damp conditions, you should take along a pair of knee-high rubber boots.

- Rain gear. Weather conditions can change quickly so you want to be prepared for possible rainfalls. A lightweight, waterproof, breathable piece of rainwear could be indispensable.

- Snacks. These are for you, not the birds. Take along some high energy store bought or home made granola bars, fruits, and nuts and you'll be good to go.

If you survive and enjoy your first outing and feel that you'll definitely be doing this again, then the manufactures of birding supplies will love you as you will undoubtedly be back in their stores to buy cameras, recorders, and other hight priced items in preparation for your next trip.

Useful Tips For Planning Your Wildlife Safari to Kenya and Tanzania

Kenya and Tanzania represent an amazing combination of an African wildlife safari. You will enjoy a memorable safari whether in individual countries or combining both countries.

Designing your Kenya and Tanzania safari itinerary

If you are thinking of combining the two countries, on an average budget safari overland, you are well-advised to put aside about 12 to 14 days at the minimum to allow you enjoy a well-designed safari program.

You can however visit more parks and reserves with the same number of days if you can afford to fly between some destinations. For example in, Kenya, there are regular, reliable schedule flights between Nairobi and some of the well-known wildlife areas like Maasai Mara, Amboseli and Samburu. Likewise, you will find similar regular schedule flights between Arusha and the various lodges in the vast Serengeti and Lake Manyara. Needless to say, by flying between some of the parks and reserves, you save on the time. This is of course besides the relative comfort that the flight options offer.

In comparison with the schedule fixed departure tours, a private safari is much better in the sense that it offers you the flexibility to make changes and enjoy the safari at your own pace. With the schedule fixed departure tours, one is obliged to follow the program as set from the beginning, taking into consideration the interest of the other participants.

The climate

If there is a perfect climate in the world, surely it is in East Africa with cool mornings and warm middays. Although it can be hot and sticky by the sea, inland the air is dry and even at midday the temperatures are equitable. Due to the proximity to the equator, sunrise occurs daily between 06.00hrs and 06.30hrs while sunset takes place 12 hours later. It can get quite chilly in the early morning and evening hence visitors should pack a sweater. Each time of year has its special attractions. There are two main rainy seasons - usually mid-April to the end of May and November to mid-December. Even during the rains, the weather can be pleasant with rain occurring in the early morning and late in the afternoon or evening. If you travel during the rainy season, insist on using 4WD vehicles for your overland travel between the nightstops.

Visa Regulations

Visitors must be in possession of valid visa before entering either Kenya or Tanzania. Most nationalities can obtain the tourist visa at the entry points - airports and designed border post. For both the tourist visa and commercial visa, the regulations vary dependent on nationality and country of origin. It is always advisable to check with the nearest tourist office or diplomatic mission. Your travel agent or tour operator may also be in position to advise you on specific visa needs.

Health regulations and medical advise

Inoculation centres in the country of origin will provide updated information and advice on health regulations and recommendations. As Kenya & Tanzania enjoy a healthy, invigorating climate, visitors need feel no concern for their general health during their stay. However, malaria is endemic in certain areas and anti-malaria medication should be taken according to prescription recommendations. Visitor requiring special medication should pack sufficient supplies in their hand luggage. Chemist shops are well stocked, but the same generic medication may not be readily available. It advisable to drink bottled water. On safari, rooms are provided with flasks of filtered and purified water. Mineral water is readily available.

Customs and exit regulations

Personal effects, film and cameras may be imported temporarily free of duty. However professional video equipment, tape recorders, radios, musical instruments and souvenirs from other countries may require a customs bond to ensure re-exportation. Baggage is normally inspected by customs officials on arrival and departure. Please strictly adhere to baggage limitations as advised by the airline as excess baggage charges can be quite expensive.

Airport and departure taxes

A local airport service charge is payable on departure for domestic flights. In some cases, it may be included on the airfare. Please seek clarification from our travel / booking agent.

The currency
Kenya's currency is the Kenya Shilling (KES). Tanzania's currency is Tanzania Shilling (Tsh). There is no restriction to the amount of foreign currency a visitor may import provided that it is exchanged through authorized dealers only. It is essential to retain a receipt for each transaction in order to re-exchange the local currency on departure. Foreign currency as the U.S. dollar or British pound (in cash or travellers cheque) are the most widely accepted. Well known credit cards are also widely accepted in Kenya & Tanzania It is a legal offence to deface local currency.

The Banks

Banking hours are from 09.00hrs to 14.00hrs Monday to Friday. Most Hotels and Lodges change money outside these hours.

Security

Normal precautions as in any other destination worldwide should be taken. Keep a close watch on handbags, wallets and cameras when walking in crowded places and avoid walking at night (take a taxi). Place all valuables in safety deposit boxes at hotels and lodges and only carry small amounts of cash. Wear as little jewellery as possible, if any, and never leave valuables on show in an unattended car or tour bus. Taking photographs at airports, near military installations, of policemen, the President, the national flag, the State House, state lodges, soldiers, prisons and prisoners etc., is prohibited. Before photographing local people, permission should be obtained and a fixed price agreed. Seek the assistance of your driver/guide in this matter.

Driving

Driving is on the left for all countries.

Clothing

Safari clothing should be casual and comfortable. Cotton slacks and shirts, with skirts and culottes for ladies and a light sweater or jacket, during the day. Evening wear in game lodges and safari camps can be very casual. In the more sophisticated clubs and hotels gentlemen will be required to wear a jacket, while ladies should dress rather more formally. At high altitudes, where early mornings and evenings can be very chilly, warm sweaters, socks and comfortable shoes are recommended. Pack suntan lotion, swimwear (to be reserved for the beach and pool only) and a small first aid kit. Local customs and modesty should be respected.

Laundry

Most hotels, game lodges and safari camps offer a 24-hour inexpensive laundry service.

Electricity

Voltage in East Africa is 240volts/50 cycles AC, British standard generally through three-pin square plugs. Some lodges and camps have power only in the early mornings and evenings and, in some, video charging facilities are centralized.

Luggage

For your safari, it is strongly recommended that luggage is limited to one piece per person. A small overnight bag is essential. All city hotels provide secure storage for left luggage. On all itineraries where journeys by light aircraft are involved the baggage allowance would be around 15kgs per person.

Photography

There is no shortage of the more usual film throughout Kenya, however it is expensive and visitors are advised to bring plentiful supplies, especially where specialist film is concerned. As a general guide, double the amount of film normally needed in other areas. In Tanzania films may not be available. For wildlife photography a 35mm single reflex camera, with telephoto lens of 200mm to 300mm is recommended. Larger lenses which require a tripod, or double reflex cameras are generally impractical. An ultra violet filter, waterproof dust cover and spare batteries are essential. A pair of good quality binoculars for each person will be a great asset.

City Hotels check in and check out

The standard check-out time for city/town hotels is 10.00hrs. That means rooms may not normally be ready for occupancy until 12.00hrs. In case you anticipate and earlier arrival, please reserve rooms from the preceding night. Day rooms up to 18.00hrs are usually available.

Checking Your Roof For Problems

If you know that it's been 15 or more years since the last time you had your roof repaired by a Dallas or Fort Worth roofing specialist, then it's about time to get one out to your home or business and have them take a look. Otherwise, you can do a decent job of inspection yourself. Why spend money on having a Fort Worth roofer look for problem areas in your roof that you can find yourself?

A good place to start, before ever climbing a ladder (which, by the way, make sure to always use precautions when climbing a ladder and have a second person spot you if possible), you can give your roof a once over from the ground. Use a pair of binoculars to look for any obvious trouble areas- missing shingles, dark spots, and misshaped lines in the roofing material. Also, while on the ground, check downspouts for shingle granules that may have washed off.

Once you've decided to go up to have a closer look at your roof, the first thing to look for is missing or loose shingles. Be very careful as you do your inspection! Shingles can be easily damaged, so you should avoid stepping on them whenever possible. Being loose isn't the only sign of a bad shingle. You should also look for loss of granulation (which may expose the fiberglass mat underneath to UV light), mold and decay, and curling.

If you have had work done to your roof in the past, there's a chance that the roofer used tar or a patch to fix any small problems. You might see this during your close inspection. The patch might be an obvious hardened blob, or it might be covered with shingles of a slightly different color than the rest of your roof. The roofing cement used in these patches may only last for a few years, so you may also want to check these areas from below-in your attic.

Another thing to give a closer look to is any flashing. Flashings are metal pieces used to waterproof spots of the roof where there may be an interruption in the roofing such as a skylight, a chimney or smoke stack, vents, or any protruding piping. Things to look for here are tears, buckling or puckering in the material, and looseness. Flashings on chimneys are prone to damage more-so than other places. The reason is the chimney will settle and shift separately from the house. While looking at the flashings, be sure to also inspect your chimney for any leaning, damaged bricks, and cracked joints.

Some more general things to look for are any signs of sag or unevenness to the roof. Cupping and buckling could be indicators of weak framing and should be give extra attention. Also check your gutters for rust, and clogs.

If you find any of these problems while inspecting your roof, it's best to have a Dallas roofing repairman come out to fix it, rather than attempt to do it yourself.

Don't Leave Home Without It

Digital cameras are a household gadget nowadays. Everybody is slowly realizing the advantages of storing all their photos and videos digitally, rather than maintain a physical copy. With the advent of this new phenomenon, the next issue on everybody's minds is to protect their gear. This calls for some research to find the right camera bag for you.

When we say camera bags, the first brand that comes to the mind is Crumpler. Crumpler has carved a niche for itself in this field by designing the trendiest and hip camera bags. Its products have sold out world over and are still going strong. Many critics might argue that Crumpler bags compromise on quality but that is definitely not true. The DA120 is one of the sturdiest camera bags and has also been rated by several web sites as one among the top 10 camera bags. The keystone and sinking barge models seamlessly blend style and oomph with protection and security. There is abundant padding on the sides to protect gear from shocks and they are also equipped with tough material that can definitely not be cut open by the ordinary thief.

Domke bags are more for the professional photographer. It has custom made bags that can be split into several compartments and can store up to several lenses, chargers, batteries and a camera in a single bag. They have been a long time favorite of several photographers the world over. But the major drawback with Domke is that its waterproof capabilities are not very enviable. This is a major downside. If you are a forest photographer, then you have to ensure maximum protection from the elements, especially from rain. There are several bags that have been designed for this purpose, the most popular one being the M-Rock Denali bag.
M-Rock recently announced its specialist outdoors camera bag. It has rain protection flaps and thick inner lining with non-permeable foam material that strives to ensure maximum protection from rain. The Denali also has several other compartments that are designed to accommodate CD players, chargers, water bottles and even binoculars. It is the ideal travel companion.

Delsey has gone the extra step to ensure the perfect blend of protection, style and functionality. Its latest release, the Delsey Gopix, is amazingly easy on the shoulder. The best aspect about Delsey is that every single part that is used to make the bag is tested under vicious conditions before being sent into the manufacturing plant. This ensures maximum benefit to the buyer and also increases its lifetime.

The final verdict. Crumpler and Lowepro are seated firmly in the driver's seat, being the leaders in this category. Domke bags are not very suitable for extensive outdoor conditions due to poor rain proof capabilities, but are still regarded as favorites among amateurs and professionals alike. Delsey and M-Rock are slowly but surely rising as major players, but must trudge longer to catch up with the leaders, who are undoubtedly, Crumpler and Lowepro.
