Sightron Rifle Scopes Could They Be The Next Choice For You?

Sightron Rifle Scopes Could They Be The Next Choice For You?

Many US scope manufacturers have been around for years and years. I consider Sightron to be the “new kids on the block”. Starting in 1994, just 16 short years ago, they have come a long way and have made a substantial footprint in today’s sporting optics market. Sightron, located in Youngsville North Carolina, is earning a reputation for the high quality of their rifle scopes. They are no doubt raising the eyebrows of king pins like Leupold, Nikon, and Burris. Dollar for dollar, the reliability, durability and repeat performance of a Sightron rifle scope cannot be ignored. Simply put these rifle scopes equal precision optical equipment. They are designed, tested and retested for sportsmen by sportsman.

Sightron holds the patent on ExacTrack. It is the most revolutionary breakthrough in modern shooting history. This Windage and Elevation Adjustment System, features an exclusive erector tube that keeps a positive, flush point of contact, from zero alignment through even the most dramatic adjustments. In other words, you will never experience drift.  Sightron scopes are as durable as any scopes on the market today because they are built on one piece, one inch aluminum main tubes. The lenses feature the Sightron’s “ZACT-7 Revcoat”, 7 layer coatings. The scopes are nitrogen filled, waterproof, fog proof and shock proof.  It is well known that these great rifle scopes can withstand all the harsh environments that any hunting situation may present. All Sightron scopes provide excellent viewing capabilities, with extremely crisp, clear, undistorted images.

Sightron has a rifle scope to suit every hunter and budget and they all boast the famous Sightron lifetime warranty.

Today Sightron offers three impressive lines of rifle scopes. The Sl Series, the Sll Series including the “Big Sky” and the Slll Series. They also manufacture some of the most durable, high quality and comparatively priced binoculars and spotting scopes on the market.

Sl Series – These scopes feature multi coated objectives and ocular lenses for superior performances. They have the unique 720 degree focus system. Generally speaking these are the less expensive of Sightron’s lines.

Sll Series – These are the most popular scopes and Sightron offers more available models than the SI and Slll lines. Sll and the Sll Big Sky series have features found in scopes costing hundreds of dollars more.  This is Sightron’s mid-range line and generally more expensive than the Sl series scopes.

Slll Series –  The Cadillac of the Sightron S Series.  They offer the long range series featuring 30mm tubes for extra strength and better light transmission. They are more than twice the thickness of many other scopes in the same class. These scopes are preferred by many big game hunters. This is Sightrons top of the line S series and is generally more expensive then the Sll models.

At 54 years old, I have hunted most of the United States for big game. My son has now come of age and enjoys hunting with his Dad. In the fall of 2009 we bought him his first big game rifle, a 7 mm-Mag and decided after everything that we had learned about Sightron’s quality that it was time to give them a “shot”.  We equipped his new rifle with the Sightron Slll Series, 3.5-10×44, long range, mil dot reticle, scope and off to northern Arizona we flew. As we expected conditions were horrible, and the snow was deep, but we had an excellent hunt. On day four, he shot his first mule deer, a nice 4×4 rack, but by no means a trophy. I have always been a diehard Leupold man. I own many firearms and I have always equipped them with Leupold scopes but I must admit, I was absolutely amazed at the quality, durability and excellent viewing clarity that this Sightron scope provided.  I may just go as far as to say that I am now a Leupold AND a Sightron man. I thank Leupold for a lifetime of hunting memories and Sightron for a future of brand new ones.

I am an avid outdoorsman with many interests including hunting, fishing, camping, and skiing. My partner Sharon and I created our own website which is fittingly geared towards outdoor related products. Stop in and see us, you’ll be glad that you did.

How To Get More From Your Backcountry Gear

How To Get More From Your Backcountry Gear

Time out of doors is a precious commodity to the outdoor enthusiast – but are we getting the most out of this time.  One way to ensure maximum backcountry enjoyment is to get the most possible value from the gear you acquire and use.  Here are 5 ways to get the most out of your backcountry gear – and your backcountry experience.

- Purchase the best gear you can possibly afford.  If you are going to spend a year planning your next excursion on the continental divide, spend three months getting into great shape, take three weeks vacation when it’s time for the hike, purchase an airline ticket, and so on – then why are you using the cheapest backpack you can find?  A good backpack will make all the difference in the world.  This applies to all of your backcountry gear.  Whether its your GPS unit, sleeping bag, rain gear or dual-fuel portable stove, be sure to carry good equipment in order to get the most value for your money.  Don’t buy cheap!

- Learn how to use all of your gear correctly and practice using it.  When you are completely lost, it’s not the time to learn how to navigate with a compass and map.  When you and your firewood are wet, it’s not the time to learn how to start a fire with the flare you’ve been carrying for 5 years in your pack.  Take time to learn all of the features of your gear.  You might be surprised to learn just how useful your GPS really is when you understand how to use the backtrack feature.  You’ll be mighty thankful when you learn the proper weight distribution for your backpack.  Take time to learn – practice around your home before you venture into the backcountry.

- Keep your gear with you and use it as much as possible.  Your backcountry gear isn’t just for the backcountry.  It has unlimited uses in everyday life.  Never go on a road trip without your pack.  You’ll almost always find an opportunity to use your binoculars or GPS unit.  If you don’t have your gear with you, you’ll need it – never fails.

- Take great care of your gear.  Hopefully you’ve learned this from your parents and not necessarily from experience.  Your gear will only take good care of you if you take good care of it.  Conversely, your gear will let you down if you don’t take good care of it.  That’s a bad situation to be in.  Inspect everything before you embark on your adventure.  Clean and properly store all of your gear upon your return.  Have you check your gear’s straps, fuel, waterproofing, batteries and overall condition lately?  Taking good care of your gear is an important part of enjoying your backcountry trip.

- When you’re done with it, donate it – and some of your time – to a local scout troop.  They are always looking for assistance from outdoor enthusiasts.  You’ll feel great getting this last piece of benefit out of your old trusty gear!

Optimize your time in the backcountry.  The easiest way ensure maximum outdoor enjoyment is to get the most possible value from your gear.  Let these 5 ways guide you in getting the most out of your backcountry gear – and your backcountry experience.

Where to View the Automn Leaves

Where to View the Automn Leaves

Whether its a driving tour, a cruise or a bus, leaf viewing is a great way to spend a fall vacation. It’s also big tour business and the are many options. As you dream of that hot apple cider on a crisp afternoon do a quick check list before you leave home so you’re ready for any type of weather. If you’re prepared then all you need to do is focus on having a fun and relaxing time.

Start preparing by taking out your favorite sweater. Think “chilly.” Pack one that you can use outdoors as well as under a rain jacket or sitting inside by a warm fire. It’s also time to get back into socks after a summer in sandals. A few pair of them should be on your list. Pack four pair and add a fifth one that is woolen or made for winter.

Layering clothes is paramount for fall trips outdoors. The sudden sunny burst in the afternoon versus breath chilling mornings can surprise anyone. A nice light weight fleece top with a wind proof jacket works well. Pack both.

While we think of blue cloudless skies on an autumn afternoon the chance of rain is pretty high so pack a rain suit. A jacket with a hood and pants are best. When outside all day in the wet and damp its important to keep dry all over for comfort and a complete rainsuit is the answer. Today’s styles and fabrics come in all colors and patterns so you can be stylish as well as comfortable.

Make sure to add a small folding umbrella to your bag as well. Raincoats are fine but unless its full length with a zip in liner, rainy weather can start to feel downright uncomfortable by mid afternoon. Its miserable by evening unless you are warm from head to toe. An umbrella can help.

Pack a warm hat and gloves. Comfortable shoes are also a must and if they also happen to be waterproof its a big plus at this time of year.

Your camera gear needs to be in good working order so check it at home before you leave. Take extra batteries and memory cards. Film can be bought along the road if you want to travel light. Double check you camera bag and make sure it’s moisture proof. If at all possible avoid taking a brand new camera since anything untried can miss these great photos you’ll want to show off once you get back home.

However you are traveling you’ll be on the move a lot, always more than you think, since you have to be outdoors to see foilage. Being mobile in your traveling will allow you greater freedom and flexibility. Pack light and put all your items into a single, carryable, soft side bag. Take a day pack for those daily viewing excursions and make sure you put a bottle of drinkng water inside. Take prescriptions in original bottles and always pack more than you will need. Binoculars are not required but can be a great joy if you happen to catch birds migrating or wildlife grazing before the first snowfall.

As long as you have the right gear you can travel anywhere anytime of the year. See you on the road!

Things to Bring When You’re on an African Safari Trip

Things to Bring When You’re on an African Safari Trip

Safari Clothing – The clothes you bring on a trip are important because you want to be both comfortable and protected. In the wilds of Africa, a long sleeve shirt is a must to bring to protect you from annoying mosquito bites and to keep you from the hot sun as well. You’ll need long trousers too for the same reasons. Avoid also bright colored clothing because it can attract animals. For that reason, most safari clothing you will find come in khaki, tan, and light brown. Neutral colors are also effective in keeping you cooler during warm days. Back Pack – When you pack for your African travel, you have to carry your back pack not more than 25 pounds since you will be lugging it around from camp to camp. Make sure that the straps of your pack fit you comfortably. Thus it is also better to talk to your travel specialist of how many things will you be bringing because you may only need a few days of clothing supply since many of the camps and lodges have laundry facilities. Sun and Mosquito Protection – You have to keep in mind that you are not going to a beach, but to a Safari. Therefore you will most probably encounter mosquitoes so it is better to bring strong mosquito repellent containing DEET with you. Be sure to spray your clothes and exposed skin. Avoid also using perfume, hairspray, and other scented products because they may attract mosquitoes. Remember to also pack sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Polarized Sunglasses – Bring polarized sunglasses with good quality to protect you from the strong, bright sun. Good Walking Shoes – Bring comfortable shoes that fit you well. Pack good quality socks too. These can help you walk and roam around the place easy. Sun Hat – Bring a quality hat with a good brim to cover your face and ears. Camera – Capture the wonderful sceneries and as well as rare animals that you see in the Safari. Make sure to bring also extra batteries. Other things that you can bring are: Personal toiletries, binoculars, basic medical supplies, tissues, waterproof bags for camera and electronic devices.

Summer-time gifts for all occasions

Summer-time gifts for all occasions

Summer is the season that represents sun, fun and relaxation. It is a time most people love, because during those warm, enjoyable days wonderful memories are created. The air smells fresh and inviting, we see happy faces in the park, the barbecues are sizzling hot and many organize exciting get-togethers with friends and family. It is the perfect time for celebrations!

Buying gifts during the summer is easy, regardless if the present is for a birthday, anniversary, a new baby, wedding, a recovery at the hospital, or simply a token of love. There are so many choices; it could almost make your head spin.

Summer-related gifts for children are plentiful. Most kids love the outdoors and are always looking for new activities. Even the smallest ones can ride a tricycle or bike, love to kick a ball around, or make a castle in their brand-new sandbox.  Pre-schoolers, as well as their older brothers and sisters would go crazy if they received a club or tree house, a waterslide or tent for their birthday. Even fashionable bathing suits, sandals, surfing gear, an animal backpack, a trampoline, or moon shoes are acceptable gifts that youngsters will love.

Even the adults can enjoy a good game of lawn bowling or croquet, and what fervent barbecue fan will say no to a state-of-the-art meat thermometer, a stainless steel tool set, a cookbook, or a personalized apron? You can even add some fancy, colourful dishes and a couple of comfortable chairs with cup holders.

Newlyweds generally can use a lot of items to start their new life. They may be in need of teak patio furniture, a variety of gardening tools, soothing window chimes, a relaxing hammock, or a set of expandable, rolling suitcases. If they love the outdoors, they may need camping gear, hiking boots, a GPS system, binoculars, a brass compass with adjustable dial, or solar powered lanterns, just to name a few of the items that could be quite useful.

Much more romantic, and also quite useful, are picnic baskets. They come in all shapes and sizes and can be accessorized according to your budget. To optimize the gift, you can even add a bottle of wine, crackers and cheese, and a box of chocolates. Parents or other wealthy relatives could even include travel tickets to a popular romantic destination. Who wouldn’t love to spend a few days in Paris, Las Vegas, Niagara Falls, or Queensland’s Mission Beach! Another good idea here is to give gourmet food hampers filled with delicious quality ingredients. These sorts of gifts are always appreciated and used.

Young or old, sports enthusiasts always need to upgrade their equipment. Activity related gifts could include, a waterproof golf scope, unbreakable tees, a travel fishing kit, motorcycle saddle bags, a basketball, diving fins and snorkel, or surfing board.

Gifts related to the summer season can be gifted all year around. There is indeed nothing wrong with gift-wrapping a pair of designer shorts, a beauty travel case, a digital camera, and a travel guide in the middle of the winter, especially when you know the recipient has already booked a summer cruise. It will make them look forward to their trip and will also show them that you and care!

Gift Sensations are an online gift basket retailer who supply gift hampers of all kinds for all occasions. For men or women, babies or couples, Christmas hampers, corporate gifts or customised gourmet food and wine hampers, Gift Sensations deliver Australia-wide and pride themselves on quality. How to Have a Worry-Free Camping Trip

How to Have a Worry-Free Camping Trip

Camping trips are supposed to be fun, relaxing, and worthwhile. They provide great opportunities for bonding with your family or friends, enjoying the glorious beauty of nature, and doing exhilarating outdoor activities that you are not normally able to do. However, this kind of vacation can turn into a disaster if you do not plan it the right way or when blunders come along. To ensure that you have a worry-free camping vacation, here are excellent tips to remember.

1.    Bring all the essentials

The obvious things you need to bring for the trip include tent, sleeping bag, food, water, clothing, and toiletries. Other items that are equally important that you might miss are large camping chairs (for utmost comfort), Coleman tables and chairs, campsite reservation documents, first aid kit, fire starters, map, compass, axe, rope, rain gear, rechargeable lights, batteries, whistle, tent pegs, toilet paper, board games, cards, camera, binoculars, flashlight, cell phone, energy bars, water purification tablets, sunscreen, and insect repellent.

To make packing stress-free, create a checklist that you can use to check if you have packed everything you need for the trip. Moreover, organize all the items in such a way that those you need more frequently would be easily accessible. This way, you will not have to dig through all your things whenever you need to get something from your pack.

2.    Prepare for bad weather

A major cause for concern is the weather. Even if weather forecast tells you that the day will be sunny and bright, it is still possible for rain and storm to occur. This is why, it is imperative to be prepared for the rain by having handy plastic and Ziploc bags that you can use to waterproof all valuable items especially those that can be damaged by water like cell phone, camera, and so on. Also, prepare raingear like raincoats and poncho to keep yourself dry in case it starts to rain.

3.    Always keep an eye on the kids

With the kids roaming and running around, anybody can get hurt anytime. Because of this, you need to keep a close look on your children to ensure that no accidents come their way. If you need to do something, have another adult take over in supervising them. If they are going for a swim or hike, make sure that there will be an adult that will guide them. Even if they know how to swim, have them wear flotation devices and never let them swim alone.

4.    Safety first at all times

Aside from the mentioned tips above, you can increase safety even further by tucking food away every after each meal. This is to avoid attracting bears, raccoons, and other creatures into your campsite. It is also a good idea not to put up a campfire and to use a lantern at night instead.

Going on a camping trip should be a relaxing time for you. With proper planning and preparation, you would not have anything to worry about. Enjoy, relax, and have fun!

Family Fun in the Forest: Camping Outdoors

Family Fun in the Forest: Camping Outdoors

Camping is a lot of fun for people who enjoy the opportunity to spend some quieter moments in the woods. For individuals who are able to get away for a few days, the experience can be invigorating. The challenge of going without many routine life conveniences in itself can be gratifying to those who like to “rough it.” One of the greater challenges, however, is faced when the camping trip is accompanied by others who are not quite as exuberant.

Let’s suppose you have big plans for a long weekend in the woods. You take half a day off of work on Friday and intend to stay until Monday evening. This time, though, it’s a family trip. You are anxious to experience a few refreshing days of family time away from the city or suburbia, but your spouse has marginal interest and your children are easily bored. What do you do?

In order to realize the benefits of both competing needs (i.e. time away in the woods and happy family experience), you make some adjustments to accommodate the preferences of everyone.
You, for example, may be the energetic adventurer who would be more than content with a sleeping bag, clean water, and a hunting bow. Your wife, on the other hand, might enjoy walking in through the woods for a few hours, but at the end of the day prefer a warm bath in a hotel room. And for the kids, baseball and video games are their sources of fun. Trouble is brewing unless you plan ahead.

Though it will take some effort, you can meet at least a portion of the interests of each person.

So one of the keys to creating a win-win scenario concerns both how you approach the trip and what you bring.

Some recommendations follow.

STANDARD STUFF

•Locate an established camp ground that is secure and safe.

•Spend a little investigation time on the Internet to locate a camp ground that offers some flexibility for family preferences and optional activity opportunities.

•The family tent should be bigger than a, um, pup tent. Decide in advance through family conversations if everyone would prefer to stay together in one large tent, one for the adults with another for the kids, or (especially given older kids of different genders) a separate tent for each person.

•Warm (warm!) and appropriately sized sleeping bags. And did I mention making sure they are warm…

•Some form of cushioning for under the sleeping bags. This could be an air mattress or perhaps a foam cushion.

•Flashlights and extra batteries that do not have an expiration date from the turn of the century.

•Matches, and lots of them, in a waterproof container. Even if the matches do not drop into a river, humidity can make them might more difficult to strike.

•Toilet paper. Though you should expect that camp site restrooms will keep ample supply of toilet paper, do not bet your embarrassing discomfort on it. And if you are at a camping area that does not happen to provide toilet facilities, you – the adventurous one – might find it thrilling to make do with leaves. But you will be the only one. On second thought, if the camp site does not have toilets, look for another.

•If you bring any canned foods, do not forget the can opener. Having done that once in the woods myself, it was not a fun-reinforcing experience. And I was hungry…

•A basic first aid kit.

•Extra clothing. Especially if there is a forecast of any rain.

EXTRA STUFF

Though certainly not comprehensive, here are a few additional items to consider bringing along in order to help make your time in the woods a positive experience for everyone. The more you bring on the trip, the more you may feel like you are simply dragging your home life into another environment. So you must weigh the balance.

•Bear in mind that you are headed for the woods, not a hotel. Bring soap, shampoo, towels, and other bathroom items that you might ordinarily expect to find supplied to you elsewhere.

•Similarly, if you are most comfortable sleeping on a pillow, bring one or more.

•For family members who need corrective lenses, bring an extra pair of glasses or contacts. If your primary items are lost, you do not want vision to be compromised in the woods.

•Camera, film (if using exposure film), camcorder, battery chargers, and binoculars. There are often beautiful memories you will want to capture from your visit with nature.

•Sun screen for warmer weather. Tree leaves will generally protect exposed skin in the woods, but rays do get through and you do not want to spend days 2 and 3 of your trip burned from the previous day’s activities.

•Pain relievers, antacids (consider, after all, what you are likely to be eating…), and medication that family members typically need.

•One or more sets of Walkie-Talkies. If anyone wanders off and gets lost, a means of communication may be critical.

•Kitchen comforts, such as snacks, coffee, dishes, plates, cups, baggies for food storage.

•Games and playing cards. Maybe even a football to toss around in open areas.

•TV guide. Ok. Maybe not…

The main point to keep in mind is that when you are camped out in the woods, most normal conveniences of the home are unavailable, so some family members could feel trapped. You can help to ensure the trip creates a very positive set of memories by respectfully taking all participants into account. You won’t regret it!

Packing for a Safari Adventure

Packing for a Safari Adventure

Going for an African safari is perhaps one of the top items on any adventure enthusiast’s “must-do” list. If you’re amongst the lucky few who are soon going to realize this long cherished dream, make sure you’re adequately prepared so your journey into the wild doesn’t turn into a nightmare.

While you gear yourself up for a few days of eerie quiet broken only by the howl of an animal here or hum of a bird there, sleeping in tents with minimal luxuries, getting up at the crack of dawn to catch the magnificent fauna in action, there is another, less thrilling part of a safari vacation that needs to be taken care of if you’re to enjoy this union with nature and that’s – packing!

Now before you start groaning “not again,” let me tell you that packing for a jungle safari is unlike packing for any other trip because of the unique nature of this type of adventure. While you may not be required to carry a lot of heavy duty gear like you would on a camping on a hunting trip, there are certain essentials that you should not leave home without when embarking on a jungle safari.

First, you have to pack appropriate clothes for a trip of this kind. Khakis, shorts, and t-shirts are what you’ll probably live in most during a safari. But it’s a good idea to bring a few pairs of trousers and long-sleeved shirts so there’s minimal skin exposed to animal and insect bites and even the sun. Pants and shirts also come handy when you have to wade your way through thick bushes and as evening wear when the temperature dips.

It’s important you wear only muted shades like brown, beige, tan, khaki, etc. because bright colors can attract animals. Wearing white is a no-no as well.

Next thing you need to pack is a good, sturdy pair of walking boots. Again the same rule applies here – the less exposed you are to animals and bugs, the better. So, no open toes, no sandals, no slippers – even if you’re not planning to step out of the jeep.

Weather can be a bit unpredictable at times at these places and you may encounter some rainfall, so be prepared with an umbrella and a waterproof jacket.

Carry a wide brimmed hat or scarf and sunglasses to protect yourself from intense sunlight. However, this may not be enough and you should bring a strong sunblock of SPF higher than 30 and always carry it along with you wherever you go.

The other essential gear that goes into your bag include a bug or mosquito repellant, first aid supplies, a guide book of the place you’re visiting, wet tissues or wipes, a flashlight, a good pair of binoculars and of course a camera to capture nature at its best.

Most Safari operators will ask you to bring a soft-sided adventure luggage and some don’t even allow large rucksacks due to limited space on their vehicles. It’s best if you brought an expedition duffle that meets your Safari operator’s guidelines and carry a separate excursion backpack that travels with you all the time.

Travelling to Uganda

Travelling to Uganda

From the moment you land at Entebbe‘s modern and efficient international airport, with its breathtaking equatorial location on the forested shore of Island – strewn Lake Victoria, Its is clear that Uganda is no Ordinary safari Destination’

Dominated by an expansive golf course leading down to the lakeshore and century –old botanical garden alive with the chatter of acrobatic monkeys and colorful tropical birds, Entebbe itself is the least obviously urban of all comparably sized African towns. The Just 40km distant, sprawled across seven hills, there is the capital Kampala. The bright modern feel of this bustling, cosmopolitan city reflects the on going economic growth and political stability that has characterized Uganda since 1986, and is complemented by the sloping spaciousness and runaway greenery of its garden setting.

Ecologically, Uganda is where the east African savanna meets the West African Jungle. Where else but in this impossibly lush country can one observe lions prowling the open plains in the morning and track chimpanzees through the rainforest undergrowth the same afternoon, then the next day navigate the tropical channels teeming with hippo and crocodiles before setting off into the misty mountains to stare deep into the eyes of a mountain gorilla? Certainly, Uganda is the only safari destination whose range of forest primates is as impressive as its selection of plains antelope. And this verdant biodiversity is further attested to by Uganda’s status as by far the smallest of the four African Countries whose bird checklist tops the 1,000 mark.

Yet there is more to the country than wildlife – far more. There is the mighty Nile, punctuated by the spectacular Murchison Falls, and the setting for some of the world‘s most thrilling commercial White- water rafting. There are snow capped peaks of the Rwenzori, which provide a tantalizing challenge to dedicated mountaineers, as well as the Virunga Volcanoes and Mount Elgon, both of which offer highly rewarding hiking opportunities through scintillating highland scenery. More sedately, the beautiful islands of Lake Victoria and Bunyonyi are idyllic venues, as are the Myriad forest –fringed crater lakes that stud the rift Valley floor and escarpment around Fort Portal. Whether you are a first time safari goers or a seasoned African travelers, Uganda –With its Unique blend of Savannah and Forest creatures, its rare wealth of montane and Lake habitats –is simply dazzling.

Uganda’s reputation as Africa’s friendliest Country steams partly from the tradition of hospitality common to its culturally diverse populace and partly from the remarkably low level of crime and hassle directed at tourism.

But this amiable quality extends beyond the easy going people. Uganda ‘s eco –friendliness is attested by the creation of six National Parks under the present administration, as well as a recent mushrooming of community – based ecotourism ,projects at the grassroots level, while the mood of social enlightenment is characterized by the progressive and much promoting women’s rights. The climate too is highly agreeable, reflecting the combination of an equatorial location and medium to high a

Altitude while amenities such as hotels and game lodges now rank with the very best Africa has to offer

People and Culture

Situated at the geographical heart of the African continent, Uganda has long been a cultural melting pot, as evidenced by the existence of 30-plus different indigenous languages belonging to five distinct linguistic groups, and an equally diverse cultural mosaic of music, art and handicrafts.

The country’s most ancient inhabitants, confined to the hilly southwest, are the Batwa and Bambuti Pygmies relics of the hunter –gatherer cultures that once occupied much of East Africa to leave behind a rich legacy of rock paintings, such as at the Nyero shelter near Kumi.

At the Cultural core of modern –day Uganda lie the Bantu –speaking kingdoms of Buganda, Bunyoro, Ankole and Toro, whose traditional monarchs –reinstated in the 1990s after having been abolished by President Milton Obote in 1967-still serve as important cultural figureheads. According to oral tradition, these centuries –old kingdoms are offshoots of the mediaeval kingdoms of Batembuzi and Bachwezi, which lay in the vicinity of present day Mubende and Ntusi, where archaeological evidence suggests that a strongly centralized polity had emerged by the 11th century. Three former kings of Buganda are buried in an impressive traditional thatched building at the Kasubi Tombs in Kampala.

Else where, Uganda’s cultural diversity is boosted in northeast by the presence of the Karamojong traditional pastoralists whose lifestyle and culture is reminiscent of the renowned Masai, and in the North West by patchwork of agricultural peoples whose Nilotic languages and cultures are rooted in what is now Sudan. The Rwenzori foothills are home to hardy Bakonjo, whose hunting shrines are dedicated to one legged, one armed, one eyed pipe smoking spirit known as Kalisa, while the Bagishu of the Mount Elgon region are known for their colorful IMbalu ceremony, an individual initiation to Man hood that peak in activity in and around August of every even numbered year.

National Parks and Safaris

Sprawling across both sides of the equator, an excellent network national parks and other protected areas offers wildlife enthusiasts a thrilling opportunity to experience Uganda ‘s bio diversity which embraces mesmerizing tracts of thorn –bush savannah, lush expanses of tropical rainforest, shimmering, lakes and rivers heaving with aquatic life and some of Africa’s tallest mountains

The country’s largest protected area is Murchison Falls National Park, whose palm –studded grassland supports dense populations of lion, buffalo, elephant, Rothschild’s giraffe and Uganda Kob; immense concentrations of hippos and birds ca be observed from morning an afternoon launch trips along the Nile below the spectacular waterfalls for which the park is named.

Set majestically in the shadow of Rwenzori flanking lakes Edward and gorge, the lush savannah of Queen Elizabeth National Park offers prime grazing to buffalo, elephant and various antelope as well as hosting a include giant forest hog and the legendary tree- climbing lions of Ishasha sector.

Of Uganda’s Forested reserves Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is best known for it’s superb gorilla tracking and various small antelope, as well as 23 bird species restricted to the Albertine Rift.

Kibale National Park hosts a population of more than 1,000 chimpanzees of which one 80 –strong community has been habituated to tourist visits. Common monkey species include the acrobatic red colobus and black and white colobus, and the handsome L’Hoest monkey.

The closest savannah reserve to Kampala, Lake Mburo National Park is centered on a series of swamp-fringed lakes known for their rich birdlife, while the fringing acacia woodland harbours dense populations of Zebra, warthog, buffalo, impala and eland , the largest of African antelope.

Set on the Kenya border near Mbale, Mount Elgon National Park encompasses the 4,321 metres mountain for which it is named, and which has the largest base of any extinct volcano in the world. A lush Mosaic of Afro Montane forest, grassland and moorland habitats makes this park a rewarding destination for hikers and natural history enthusiast.

Gorillas & Primates

Uganda’s star attraction is the endangered mountain gorilla, the bulkiest of living primates and among the most peaceable, starting into the pensive brown eyes of these gentle giants, who share 95% of their genes with humans, is as humbling as it is thrilling; no less so when one realizes that fewer than 700 individuals survive, divided between Bwindi National Park and the Virunga Mountains.

Within Uganda, five habituated Gorilla troops –four in Bwindi and one in Mgahinga National Park can be visited by a total of 30 tourists daily.

Uganda is also home to Man’s closest relative, the chimpanzee, a delightful ape whose evocative pant hoot call is definitive sound of the African rainforest. Chimpanzee communities have been habituated for tourism at Kibale Forest, Budongo forest and Queen Elizabeth National park’s Kyambura gorge.

A community of orphaned chimps, most of which were confiscated from poachers, can be visited on Ngamba Island, which lies on Lake Victoria 45 Minutes by motorboat from Entebbe.

Monkeys are exceptionally well represented in Uganda. Indeed, Kibale Forest boasts the greatest Primate variety and density in East Africa, with five or six species likely to be observed over the course of one afternoon walk. Elsewhere, Mgahinga National Park hosts habituated troops of the rare Golden monkey, while Murchison falls is one of the few East African strongholds for the spindly, plains-dwelling patas monkey. The Fossilized 20-million year old bones of Morotopithecus, were unearthed in the 1960s near Moroto in Eastern Uganda, and are now housed in the National Museum in Kampala.

Lake & Ssese Islands.

One quarter of Uganda’s surface area consists of wetlands, ranging from vast inland seas such as Lake Victoria, the world’s second largest fresh water body, to the marshy expanse of Lake Kyoga, formed by the Nile as it drains into a shallow sump at the very centre of the country.

Mountain ringed Lake Bunyonyi is one of Uganda’s fastest developing wetland destinations, its steep sided shores and small islands dotted with rustic hotels and campsites. Another rising star is the cluster of 200 crater lakes around Kibale forest, several of which now host community based eco tourism projects.

The Jewel in Lake Victoria’s crown is Ssese Archipelago whose 84 islands are all well watered and lushly forested. Buggala, the largest island, makes for an ideal weekend retreat, and offers superb opportunities for bird watching and for hooking heavyweight Nile Perch.

Bird Watching

Transitional to the East African savannah and the western rainforests, Uganda is Africa’s most complete bird watching destination, with more than 1,000 species recorded within an area comparable to that of Great Britain.

Specialist birding tours through Western Uganda routinely notch up an incredible tally of 400 species within two weeks, while enthusiastic amateurs might reasonably hope to see 300 species within the same time frame.

Popular sites in Western Uganda Include Bwindi and Kibale National Parks for forest birds, Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls National Park for savannah inhabitants and prehistoric –looking swamp dweller notable for its heavy clog-lake Bisina, a stronghold for the endemic fox’s weaver as well as papyrus –dwellers such as shoe bill and papyrus Gonolek.

Adventure

Uganda is a classic adventure tourism destination. Bujagali falls, an hour’s drive east of Kampala, is the launching point for one of the world’s most thrilling commercial white water rafting routes, passing through three heart stopping grade five rapids in one day.

Other activities at Bujagali include Kayaking, mountain hiking, quad biking and new 44 metre-high bungee jump from a cliff above the Nile.

Uganda boasts some of Africa’s top hiking and climbing destinations. Serious mountaineers need look no further than the majestic Rwenzori Mountains, whose craggy 5,000 metre-plus glacial peaks offer a genuine challenge to experienced alpine climbers, while fit hikers will find the six day loop trail through the forest and moorland zones as rewarding as it is demanding. Further east, Mount Elgon, Africa’s eighth-highest mountain, offers an excellent and relatively undemanding introduction to Afro-montane climates and vegetation, culminating in the ascent of a 6km wide volcanic caldera studded with water falls, caves and hot springs.

Getting Around.

Consistently ranked among Africa’s fastest growing economies since 1986, Uganda has simultaneously experienced a steady expansion of road, communications and other vital infrastructures and a corresponding increase in international tourist arrivals and up market facilities.

Charter flights can be arranged between domestic tourist attractions, while several reputable safari operators based in Kampala can arrange road excursions. Surfaced roads link the capital to the major towns of Jinja, Mbale Kabale, Kasese and Fort portal, from where well-maintained dirt roads lead to the game reserves and National Parks.

Most National parks and other tourist hubs are serviced by at least one or two up market lodge, ensuring that your adventure will be complemented by the full range of creature comforts, stylish en-suit accommodation, fine cuisine, chilled drinks, and friendly service. Internet facilities are available in larger towns while an extensive satellite telephone network makes it possible to stay in touch even in the most remote of locations

The best link in the world for what to pack:
http://upl.codeq.info/index.jsp?mapApplet=true&map=world

The amount of what to take is up to you and depends on the trip’s duration – you don’t need a convoy of elephants.
Moreover, you can purchase some of the stuff abroad and avoid over-carrying.

Prohibitions

There is a strict rule no to take weapons (pistols, pocket knives, scissors, etc) or any other thing that can be used as a weapon, like acid, toxics, contagious materials, liquids, gases, oxygen, flammable or radioactive products.
